Day 5 Simplicity Challenge - Linen Closets

April 28, 2017

Hello again, fellow purgers!

Today we are just going to jump right in to our challenge!

After going though so many of your personal items over the last four days,

today's challenge should really feel like a piece of cake!

We're tackling the linen closets!

I do need to clarify something here though.

While the category is called Linen Closets,

if you have any type of linens in bedroom closets,

or storage bins, or baskets or trunks, or wherever,

those also need to be included.

This category also includes tea towels, dish clothes and table clothes,

regardless of where they are located.

I keep all of my table clothes in my linen closets along with my place mats.

But, my dish clothes and tea towels are kept in a drawer in my kitchen.

These are all considered "linens" so they are included in today's challenge.

Basically, you're going to go through every blanket, sheet set, towel, face cloth,

tea towel, dish cloth, etc, regardless of where they are.

I feel like I need to give you a little disclaimer here.

I did not actually go through all of my "linens" in one day,

BUT.......

it's because I purged all of my tea towels and dish clothes just before Christmas.

I don't have a before pic, or a pic of the amount I got rid of,

but let me tell you,

it was significant!

I had way to many tea towels.

Like, a ridiculous amount.

And the thing was

I wasn’t using half of them.

Do you want to know why?

Because, I was saving them.

Really.

For what, I don’t actually know.

For when I was having company maybe?

Or, perhaps I was saving my “good ones” for special occasions?

It sounds ridiculous when I admit it out loud, (or um, in writing….)

But, that’s the truth.

(Can I be honest here?

I actually found I was doing that with my wardrobe as well.

Saving certain clothes for something special…….a special day maybe.....

And then one day, I went to put on a favorite top and discovered it didn’t fit any more.

What a waste. Why do I do that????)

Anyway, right before Christmas I just decided that was dumb.

I decided to use my “good ones” just because I like them.

Actually, that is now my approach to everything in my home.

To stop saving stuff for later.

It’ silly. We should be enjoying our stuff while we have it; while it fits; while we love; while it’s still in style…….

Sorry, I digress.

Anyhow, my tea towels and dish clothes were done before Christmas.

Why don’t you start there as well?

Get rid of stained, ripped, and thread bare ones.

Get rid of the ones that don’t dry your dishes.

You know the ones I’m talking about?

They’re all hard and don’t absorb water; they mostly just move it around?

I have no idea who makes those……probably a man.

And stained dish clothes?

Get rid of those as well.

I converted all my stained ones to cleaning rags.

In my house cleaning rags just keep disappearing so, I find I’m always looking for some.

Move on to towels and face cloths next.

I kept all of my towels.

Some of them are pretty sketchy, but I don’t have tons,

and my daughter goes through them like crazy.

(She swims, so……)

I have enough "pretty" towels for when I have company over so I’m good with that.

My face clothes however are a different story.

They are awful.

Seriously.

They are stained and rusted, (how does that happen???) and thread bare and gross.

I honestly can’t remember the last time I bought face clothes.

So, I'm purging and buying new ones.

....and hand towels.

I need those too.

It’s time.

I won’t buy white, even though I love white.

I will buy dark ones, grey maybe, (I like grey) so they hold up to staining better.

Anyhow, my towel closet looks pretty bare right now.

Let's talk about sheets.

Ok you guys.

You can only have one set of sheets on your bed at a time.

So really, how many do you need?

I wash my sheets once a week, and put the same ones back on my bed.

It’s just so much simpler.

I have a flannel set for winter, and a cotton set for summer.

I do have a second set of cotton sheets in my closet not being used.

I considered thrifting them, but,

the cotton sheets I’m using right now are white.

(I won’t buy white sheets again, even though I love them.)

Because I’m using them every day, at some point, I know they are going to become to stained to bleach.

When that happens, I will toss them and use the grey set in my closet.

I have room in there.

They are not adding clutter, and it would be silly to get rid of them only to have to buy a new set in the future.

It would be different if I had absolutely no room to store them, but I do.

So, I’m keeping them.

But, I’m getting rid of other sheet sets that are not being used.

I only need one set for the spare room.

After we have company,

I wash them and put them back on the bed.

Easy peasy!

I have two sets each for my kids beds.

That’s all I’m keeping.

(Plus a set for the Trailer, but they are on the bed in there.)

And don't forget to go through your blankets.

Keep only what you need.

Don’t keep stuff just because you have room to store it.

You want to simplify, remember?

This is not about organizing, although you will be doing that as well.

I’ve heard it said that,

“Organized clutter, is still clutter.”

I have two duvets as well.

One for summer, one for winter.

That’s all I need.

Anyway, there it is, girls!

Are you ready to tackle today’s challenge?

Of course you are!

You're a rockstar!

Remember to take pics of your progress and post them in the daily thread!

I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ve accomplished!

I’ll see you again tomorrow!
