Day 2 Simple Living Challenge - The Closet

April 25, 2017

Welcome back, ya'll!

How are you feeling after yesterday's challenge?

Great?

Nervous about today?

Totally sick to your stomach???

I know you're not!

Otherwise, you wouldn't be here again!

But, you are here,

so, I KNOW that you are absolutely ready for today's challenge!

We're tackling the bedroom closets today!

Yours first, of course, then the kids' and the husband's

(you know, if you have kids and a husband!)

if you're so inclined!

I have to admit, this was a little harder for me than the dresser drawers were yesterday.

Probably because I have more clothes in my closet than I do in my drawers,

but also because the clothes hanging in my closet tend to be my "good clothes".

Like, all of my dresses, (not many, I'm more of a jeans and t-shirt kinda girl, but still)

my dress pants and blouses and stuff, you know?

So, yeah, this one was a little harder.

Even so, I did it, and I feel really good about it!

I gotta tell you, while I don't consider myself a clothes horse,

(most of my girl-friends have more clothes in their closets than I do,)

I was still quite surprised to see the amount of clothing piled on my bed.....

My "made" bed.

Yeah, you're going to need to make your bed again this morning.

Honestly, it just makes it easier to deal with all the clothes you're going to toss on there again.

Anyhow, once again, you'll want to take everything out of your closet.

If you share a closet with your spouse, like I do, start with one person's clothing at a time.

Um, do yours.

Pull it all out.

Everything.

Including laundry baskets, gym bags etc.

Place all of you clothes on your bed.

Once you have everything out of there,

like yesterday, you're going to pick up each individual item,

and make a decision.

Do you love it and wear it?

Hang it back up!

Do you hate it?

Place it the donate pile if it's in good condition, otherwise, it goes into the toss pile.

Does it not fit you properly?

Donate or toss pile.

Basically, you're going to follow the same rules as you did yesterday.

Don't keep anything if you don't really love it.

Again, I know this can be really hard.

Often times, I feel we hang onto items out of guilt.

Guilt for removing items that we don't really love,

but that we feel like we should love.

Especially if they are in good condition,

or if they were expensive.

But girls, honestly,

you're not doing yourself any favors by keeping clothing items out of guilt.

If you feel like you need permission to get rid of things,

I'm giving you permission!

And you need to remember,

this is not supposed to feel like a battle for you.

You're not getting rid of anything because you're being told too,

you're doing this because you desire a life lived simply.

And that is a good desire!

You will benefit from it.

Your family will benefit from it.

Living simply, and without unnecessary clutter,

holds such wonderful rewards.

You are going to be so pleased!

I know I am.

Honestly, every time I walk into my closet my heart does a little flip of excitement!

I truly love seeing my newly organized, and way less cluttered closet.

And here's something else....

when I originally went through my closet,

I had two pairs of jeans that I really struggled with getting rid of.

I only sort of liked them.

Honestly, I actually only really liked the brand name of the one pair,

and I liked how the other pair looked on me, but they were super uncomfortable.

I wasn't ready to donate them, so I just put them back into my closet.

But, a few days later, after continuing to purge unwanted items from my home,

I felt like I was being silly keeping jeans that I just didn't love,

so, I pulled them out, and put them into the donate pile!

I promise you guys, it does get easier!

For now, just keep moving forward!

In the end, after I pulled out all of my husband's clothes,

I ended up switching our closet sides.

Jason actually need a larger space for all of his work clothes

and after purging a good portion of my own clothes,

I no longer needed the larger section.

Just look at the amount of stuff I pulled from my closet!

You might have more to get rid of than me, or less.

It doesn't matter.

What matters is that you make progress.

Maybe you have a pair of jeans that feel like you should get rid of,

but you're just not not quite ready to make it happen.

That's ok!

Maybe you'll be ready in a few days, or a few weeks, or maybe next month.

Like I said, just keep moving forward.

Anyway, don't forget to take your before and after pics,

and post them in today's thread on The Barefoot Warrior Facebook page.

I can't wait to see what you do!

P.S. Don't forget to come back tomorrow! :)
