What Is Hygge? - (It's More Than You Think It Is.)

What is Hygge?

It isn't what you think it is;

But then again, maybe it is.

Maybe you're one of the few who knows that....

What Is Hygge?

Hygge isn’t something you do.

Hygge is something you feel.

It is something you practice.

It starts with a desire, deep within your heart.

A desire for more; for better.

The funny thing is, this desire for more and better, often leads to a life of less.

Cozy, quiet moments at home

While there is no direct translation for the Danish term Hygge in English, it loosely refers to "creating a warm coziness during the long, cold winter months".

For those of us living in regions where winters are extreme, this is especially beneficial. Creating a cozy sanctuary within the walls of our homes can help stave off depression and anxiety.

But to me, Hygge is so much more than that.

Hygge is an experience; or perhaps, an understanding of the important things and moments, in life. It is an attitude; a feeling of well being. It is the mindset of being truly present in each and every moment.

I desire more of this.

More moments.

Moments of connection.

Moments of solitude.

Moments of awe;

Moments of reflection.

I desire better.

A better attitude, especially when things aren’t going my way.

A better understanding of who, and more importantly, Whose I am.

I desire a better relationship with those I love,

My husband,

My family,

My friends.

I want to live my life in such a way that I am able to be truly present in each, and in every moment.

To be present in the extraordinary.

But also, to be present in the ordinary.

Life, you see, is a compilation of ordinary and extraordinary.

Bliss, and mundane.

Pain and sorrow, mixed with joy and celebration.

And I want to experience more of it.

I want to experience all of it.

I want to show up for everything this life has to offer.

Everything.

And I want to be better.

To do better.

To love better.

This is the kind of life I’m after.

This is the kind of well-being that I was created for.

But this kind of life leads to less.

Less distraction.

Less anxiety.

Less frustration.

Less aimless wandering.

I desire more.

And, I also desire less.

More love.

Less anger.

More joy.

Less anxiety.

More peace.

Less turmoil.

More patience.

Less agitation.

More kindness.

Less indifference.

More goodness.

Less intolerance.

More faithfulness.

Less disregard.

More gentleness.

Less harshness.

More self-control.

Less selfishness.

This is the kind of heart I long for.

A heart filled with Love.

A heart over-come with Love.

A heart consumed with Love.

A heart that lives, and gives Love.

Because that's what life is all about.

I am loved by Love Himself.

That love grows within me and in turn,

I give His love to those around me.

This is what real living, and loving looks like.

And, what could be more hygge than that?

holy homemaking.jpg

Your most important ministry Beloved, happens within the walls of your home. Homemaking is about so much more than cooking and cleaning and doing the laundry. While it does include those things, homemaking is also about creating a home atmosphere of peace and security. It is about cultivating a place where you and your loved ones can experience grace and forgiveness, and grow in relationship with Jesus.  Holiness & Hygge is really about holy homemaking. Because what better place is there for you and your family to experience and extend, the love of Jesus?
